AISC Wins Lanier Cup

The teams of Nick Cumbie / Gary Umberger, John McCarthy / Ken Blankenship, Jim Kingery / Tom Sawchuk and Sean O'Connor / Bruce Barrett pulled off another victory for AISC in the 2011 Lanier Cup.  Thanks also to all the great crew members on the four boats.  There was wind for a change for this years event and RC pulled off three races as planned.  Thanks to UYC and RC for putting on a great event this year.

AISC Notice Board

15 Sep 2011

Wow, what a season.

Great party thanks to the work of Commodore Jim Kingery and his lovely wife Manning.  Dale at Fish Tales put a terrific venue together with great food.  Every award was collected but one and I'll deliver it to the deserving party ASAP.

We weren't smart enough to find new officers so Jim, Dan and I will be back again next year.  John McCarthy has agreed to take on the food signup role so I will better concentrate on RC and other fleet duties.

I have promised Dan I would write some scoring app to make the scoring faster and more efficient.

I forgot to mention at the party but the Gill Sale is on November 12.

The LLSC post series start on 9/21 so come out and continue to enjoy daylight savings time.

Thanks to Robin Terrell and crew for a tremendous job of geting a race off when all seemed lost.  Thanks also for Robin getting the score sheets in in record time to Dan and myself.  I'll have the finish sheets posted where the race results ultimately will end up.

Thanks also to Ed, Liz, Matt and Bethanie from 'Sweet as Bro' for the dinner at LLSC.  I gave Ed very little lead time but they came thru.

Sean

21 Aug 2011

Results of Race 17 are posted.  Several Sailors have noted that the scores are not calculating correctly regarding RC.  The RC score should be the average of the races (less throw outs).  The scorer knows this but it takes extra time to manually work that in with he current scoring program.  I am working on an automated scoring app for next season that will make the scoring quicker and easier.  Dan will have the scores posted with the proper RC values when the finals are calculated for the series.

Thanks to Jim and Manning Kingery for some great BBQ at the club Wednesday.  The Commodore knows how to do it right.

Thanks to Gary Umberger, David Reddaway and Chris Hoffman for doing RC with me also.  I hope everyone appreciated Gary's sound device.

I took some videos (sorry, wide angle action cam not the best for a start line).  Also the boat was moving so the line is all over the place.  I set the bar really low for someone to do a better video soon.

Your viewing experience will be much better if you go to the link rather than watching the tiny video on the screen here.

One last note, new SI's are available on the site.  Minor corrections were made after the first half and it wasn't uploaded till yesterday.

Tom Sawchuk and the Breakaway crew are currently signed up for RC on this Wednesday.  Tom would like to find another boat to do RC if possible.  Jim Kingery is supplying his boat and some crew for RC so you don't need a boat to help.  Please use the RC signup option or call me if you are interested.

Sean

P.S.  Problem Solved.

28 Apr 2011

Occasionallyalways, often, sometimes I hate this Fleet Captain role.  It's the business of being responsible that gets me.  John McCarthy and I had to weigh the pros and cons of racing last night and we went with caution.  Probably 60% of the input we got from the skippers was in favor of the decision but it would have been easier if someone else was making the call.  Maybe so few were opposed because they know the job is always available.

Ironically both John and I went out on two different boats so we could make sure people didn't miss the radio call or the message I got out to Aqualand via telephone.  I only saw one boat that thought racing was on.  'Flying Boat' was ready to play.  I indicated to Tom that there was no race but couldn't understand what he was saying back to me.  Maybe that's just as well.

Apparently the weather was interesting at Hartsfield around race time last night.  A friend of mine told me he was on a 757 trying to land and they aborted three landings due to 40 knot cross winds before finally setting down.

Until next Wednesday,

Sean

27 Apr 2011

John McCarthy will be doing RC tonight and will be making any announcements via channel 69.  The storms seem to be arriving after race time but we will make the go/no-go call close to race time.

Race or not, Fred McConnell is serving the LLSC food tonight.  Fred is doing his despite not having a dog in the fight for the series.  Great job Fred, thanks for helping out.

Whew (that was for Dan McGraw the scorer), the results are up.  Please be patient as Dan has put a lot of effort into his new system and we continue to appreciate Frank Atkinson's prior work.  Use the comment section or your telephone if you have issues / concerns.

Thanks Dan,

Hello Racers.  The results of Race 1 are being finalized as I type this.  We expect future results to be up quickly but this one is delayed due to Charleston travel and a new process.

Please note the check-in sheets have been updated with some additions from race 1.  If you have not paid yet please do so by tomorrow or your score for race 1 will not count.

Thanks for your patience,

Sean

14 Apr 2011

What a beautiful evening for sailing last night was.  Great job by Race Committee and the wind was better than forecasted.

The results may be delayed a few days due the the scored being in Charleston for Race Week.  I'll get them up as soon as they are completed.

For those who took part in eating at the club last night, the entire meal came in at just about $100 so remember to sign up for your turn, with the other 19 meals you get for free it's a great deal.  Thanks to Tammy Duran as well as Bruce Barrett and my lovely wife Nancy for helping while my fleet did lap 2.

Let's hope the weather is so cooperative for the entire season.

15 Mar 2011

The Wednesday Night NOR ands SI's are now on the site.  Please note the fleet splits are preliminary based on turnout of boats.  The SI's will be updated immediately after the signup party on April 1.

Please join us this Wednesday, August 4th, 6:45 PM sharp at the X mark for a ceremony to honor Joan Bray Holcomb.

This is a ceremony from the early naval history when a ship’s bell was used to signal various evolutions of the daily routine.  Two bells marked the end of the workday and offered the crew a chance to relax and reflect before taps.

On Wednesday, we will strike the bell two times to mark the end of Joan’s life here on earth and so that she can be at peace.  After the bell strikes, we will have a moment of silence in lieu of taps and then flowers will be thrown into the lake as a tribute (all are welcome to throw flowers).

Thank you in advance for your help and respect!

28 July 2010

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the sudden passing of Joan Holcomb.  She was Dean’s wife, a long time member of the sailing community and past commodore of Lake Lanier Sailing Club.

The board of AISC has decided to cancel tonight’s racing in honor of Joan.  We know that Joan would want us to continue racing, just not tonight.  Thank you for respecting this decision and please keep Dean on your thoughts and prayers through this very difficult time.

Thanks to everyone who joined in at the mid season awards party, it was a blast.  Hope everyone is looking forward to the second half, let's get some breeze.  Yesterday was beautiful on the lake.

We need someone to sign up for RC for the race on 07/07.  If you did it in the first half it doesn't mean you can't do it again.  Please use the sign-up on line or email me if you can help out.

The first half is complete and lots of great competition took place.

The wind gods didn't smile on Lake Lanier last night.  Frank Vandall and the crews from 'Bad Influence' and 'Strega' did their best to get a race off but it wasn't there.

John McCarthy did a fine job with the post 'race' food so the trip wasn't a waste.

Better luck next week,

Sean

27 May 2010

Another race in the books thanks to RC moving to 'A' mark and getting a short course in.  Good Job Linda Webster and Jeff Elam.  I would also like to Pat Funk and Penny Chinik for an excellent meal at LLSC.  We do have a couple of meal dates open as well as some RC spots so don't be shy about signing up.

Sean

20 May 2010

Hope the wind shows,

Sean

Greetings racers,

RC will be using the Barefoot Sailing barge this evening.  We will have boards up to remind everyone what the fleet definitions are as well as the start sequence.  Please make sure you check in before the race.

I have made a minor change to the SI's to include 'T' as a valid mark for RC to use.  These new SI's are on the aiscracing.com site.

Please call me on the barge @ 404-906-1418 if there is any question BEFORE we start the first sequence.

The Dogwood PRO Susan Reddaway (who you should thank when you see her) and Edith Collins have reviewed and updated the Dogwood NOR and SI's.  The new documents are available from the links on the right side of the screen.  Please be sure to come to the party Friday evening at the Pizza Pub in Tannery Row to see the fleet splits and participate in the skippers meeting.

Since this is also the kickoff for Wednesday night 2010, we should have a nearly complete list of competitors signed up so you can see how your fleet will play out this summer.  Registration runs from 18:00 to 19:30 and Skippers meeting is at 20:00.

The Saturday course and start times for the Cruising fleet will be determined before the skippers meeting.  Sunday's cruising course will be determined an posted by 8PM on Saturday night.

See you there.

18 Mar 2010

After much discussion in our final board meeting before the Dogwood we have made one final change to the Spin fleets.  The breakdown is as follows:

Low Spin PHRF 72 - 120
Mid Spin PHRF 121 - 158
Mid-High Spin PHRF 159-171
High Spin PHRF > 171

I will post new SI's tomorrow with the fleet numbers and start sequence.

As Dogwood draws near I would like to remind everyone that registrations for membership must be postmarked by March 20 to avoid the late fee.  On Friday night we will be determining fleet splits for the Dogwood and confirming the final fleet splits for Wednesday night.  See y'all on Friday.

12 Mar 2010

An update to the Wednesday SI's has been posted.  The Spin fleets have been re-arranged to now include three fleets of roughly 50 point spreads per fleet.  The fleets are as follows:

  • Spin PHRF up to 120 (low boat is 72)
  • Spin PHRF 121-171
  • Spin PHRF 172 +

See you all at the Dogwood / Wednesday sign-up party on 3/26

25 Feb 10

Hello Sailors, it's AISC time again.  The lake is up and the weather should be getting warmer.  We are four weeks from the Dogwood and Wednesday night kickoff party.  We have several new features this year:

  • We are discounting membership for new members and those who haven't raced since 2007.  The normal membership price (Dogwood and Wednesday Night racing) is $145.  New and returning racers will get it all for $75.  For those who can only do Dogwood the normal $65 price will be discounted to $45.
  • We are creating a Performance Cruiser fleet to allow those who have shown keen interest in racing their cruising boats to join in on the AISC fun.  This fleet will be given a course that is predominately reaching and will keep them out of the fray from the other fleets.
  • We are starting the Cruising fleet first @ 6:55PM and then the Non-Spin fleets @ 7PM.  This will help those boats get in to participate in the post race festivities.

Please check the links on the right side of the page to download the membership application, the SI's and NOR's.

Don't forget to fill out the Dogwood application with your food and party orders as well as your club membership application.  These need to be in by March 19 to avoid the late fee's.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  Please tell all your friends that haven't raced in awhile (or never) that this is the year to join in.
